Frequently Asked Questions About Aratamete’s Hand-Tufted Rugs
What are hand-tufted rugs?
Hand-tufted rugs are crafted using a specialised tool called a tufting gun, which pushes yarn through a backing fabric to create a loop pile. Skilled artisans meticulously follow a pre-designed pattern, resulting in a plush and textured rug. This technique allows for greater design flexibility and faster production compared to hand-knotted rugs, making hand-tufted rugs a more accessible option for those seeking a luxurious yet practical addition to their space.
Are hand-tufted rugs durable?
Yes, hand-tufted rugs are known for their durability. The dense pile and sturdy construction ensure that they can withstand everyday wear and tear, making them suitable for both residential and commercial settings. With proper care and maintenance, a hand-tufted rug can last for many years, retaining its beauty and charm.
What is the difference between woven carpet and tufted carpet?
Woven carpets, like our flat woven rugs, are created by interlacing warp and weft threads on a loom, resulting in a flat, reversible surface with intricate patterns. Tufted carpets, on the other hand, are made by punching yarn through a backing fabric, creating a plush pile. While both offer unique aesthetic appeal, tufted carpets are generally thicker and softer, while woven carpets tend to be more durable and easier to clean.
How can I minimise shedding in a hand-tufted rug?
Shedding is a natural occurrence in hand-tufted rugs, especially during the initial weeks of use. To minimise shedding, follow these tips:
- Regular Vacuuming: Gently vacuum your hand-tufted rug regularly using a suction-only setting or a soft brush attachment. Avoid using a beater bar, as it can exacerbate shedding.
- Professional Cleaning: For deeper cleaning and to remove embedded dirt, consider professional rug cleaning services periodically.
- Rotate the Rug: Rotate your rug every few months to ensure even wear and sun exposure, preventing excessive shedding in specific areas.
- Avoid Pulling Loose Fibres: If you notice loose fibres, trim them carefully with scissors instead of pulling them out, as this can damage the rug's structure.
Are hand-tufted rugs environmentally friendly?
The environmental impact of hand-tufted rugs can vary depending on the materials used and production practices. At Aratamete, we prioritise sustainability by using eco-conscious materials like TENCEL™ Lyocell silk, premium merino wool, mohair, and alpaca wool, which are sourced responsibly. Our commitment to ethical production practices ensures that our hand-tufted rugs are not only beautiful and durable but also mindful of the environment.
How long does it take for a hand-tufted rug to stop shedding?
Shedding is a natural characteristic of hand-tufted rugs, especially during the initial weeks after purchase. The duration and intensity of shedding can vary depending on the type of fibre and the construction of the rug. Generally, shedding gradually decreases over time with regular vacuuming and proper care. In most cases, hand-tufted rugs will significantly reduce shedding within a few months of use.
What is the lifespan of a hand-tufted rug?
With proper care and maintenance, a hand-tufted rug can last for many years, even in high-traffic areas. Factors that influence the lifespan of a hand-tufted rug include the quality of materials, density of tufts, frequency of use, and maintenance practices. Regular vacuuming, professional cleaning, and rotating the rug periodically can help extend its lifespan and maintain its beauty for years to come.
