Curtain Maintenance 101: Venetian Blinds, Day Curtains & More

Luxurious window curtains and blinds elevate the aesthetic of any home in Singapore. Not only that, they withstand extreme temperatures and act as a shield from harmful UV rays.  However, while they hang elegantly from the windows of your home, they can also attract a lot of allergens and dust that may affect your overall health. This makes the proper upkeep of your window curtains and blinds important not only to preserve their beauty but also for your and your loved one’s overall well-being.

At Aratamete, we give you insight into which cleaning method would best suit the material of your window treatments so you know how to extend their lifespan and continuously contribute to the visual aesthetic of your home.

How to Clean Window Curtains

1. Steam Vacuum

Most of the day curtains and night curtains from our soft furnishings store in Singapore can be cleaned with a steam vacuum. You can opt to buy your own steam cleaner or make sure to ask your cleaning company if they have their own. When using a steam cleaner, be sure to start steaming from the top and then move down to efficiently remove the dust and dirt from the fabric. The steam essentially sanitises the window curtain and eliminates dust mites.

2. Dry Clean

This method of cleaning is recommended for day and night curtains made of linen, cotton, and silk fabrics. However, know that fabrics with a higher natural fibre content may undergo shrinkage. Make sure that the dry cleaner you are working with knows how to professionally dry clean your curtains to avoid such damage. If you want to avoid the shrinkage of your window curtains altogether, you can opt to have them cleaned using a steam vacuum instead. If you are unsure about what to do and prefer engaging in professional cleaning services, you can contact CleanCraft – our trusted partner in Singapore for your day and night curtains.

3. Hand Wash

Handwashing can also be a safe option when cleaning window curtains with natural fibres. It’s recommended to use either regular laundry detergent or soap that’s specifically formulated for hand-washing delicates. If using laundry detergents, be sure to do a spot test first if this is your first time leveraging such washing methods and the curtains are newly bought. Once washed, leave the curtain to air dry and refrain from using a dryer to avoid shrinkage. Make sure that blackout-line window coverings are fully dried before hanging them to prevent mould from developing.

4. Machine Cold Wash

Machine cold wash is only recommended for window curtains made of 100% polyester. The curtains should be washed on a delicate cycle or cold wash with a slower spin. Buying normal laundry detergent to get rid of dirt will suffice but make sure to conduct a spot test first. Once washing is finished, leave to air dry naturally instead of using a dryer. There may be slight shrinkage of the curtain when machine-washed. If you opt for machine cold wash, it’s recommended that you opt for the service of professional cleaners in Singapore

How to Clean Blinds in Singapore

1. Regular Cleaning

Wooden blinds can be cleaned with the use of a soft feather duster, soft cloth or carefully vacuumed with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and dirt. The slats should be tilted fully closed in both directions to gain access for dusting to both sides of the slats.

If you have wooden Venetian blinds, do not use cleansers or furniture polish since they might damage the slats. Make sure they don’t get wet when the windows are being cleaned. They should also be protected from rain or moist environments.

Should there be scratches on your blinds’ wood slats, touch-up wood stain markers for furniture can be used to conceal the damage. Test out the markers on a bare piece of wood first to ensure it's the best match for your wooden Venetian blinds

2. Spot-Cleaning for Roller Blinds

To remove any stain on your roller blinds, spot clean with a cloth dampened with a solution of mild detergent and water. Blot carefully, so you don’t damage the fabric. However, as a result, your roller blind’s fabric will have a lighter, cleaner spot.
